Faceted navigation multiplies URLs fast — three filter groups with five options each can generate hundreds of crawlable combinations from a single category page. Left unmanaged, crawl budget gets spent on near-duplicate pages instead of the templates that actually convert, and thin filtered pages dilute the category page they were generated from.

The fix is a deliberate split: a small set of filter combinations with genuine search demand get real indexable URLs with unique content, everything else gets a self-referencing canonical or is blocked via robots rules, and internal linking is weighted toward the pages you actually want ranking.
